Unlocking every realm in God of War requires Kratos and Atreus to decipher ancient languages scattered throughout Midgard. To travel to Niflheim, the realm of fog, players must locate four specific Niflheim Language Ciphers. These key items are hidden inside distinct purple chests featuring face locks across various regions.
Understanding the Niflheim Cipher Chests
Each cipher piece is housed within a purple chest that requires Atreus to read its runes once opened. While there are seven possible chests containing these ciphers across Midgard, players only need to find four to decipher the language. Any additional cipher chests opened after learning the language will reward Kratos with valuable random enchantments instead.
Early Exploration Cipher Chest Locations
One of the earliest available chests sits at the Ruins of the Ancient in the northern part of the Lake of Nine. After lowering the water level a second time, land on the beach, clear the roaming Ancient enemy, and open the chest nearby. Another early option is located at Lookout Tower, where players must hit a gear target with the Leviathan Axe to lower protective spikes hiding the chest.
Late Game Story Progression Chests
Certain cipher pieces are tied directly to late-game story missions and cannot be accessed early on. When returning to The Mountain Summit later in the campaign, Kratos will find a purple chest right next to a Realm Tear near Sindri's shop. Additionally, during the story mission beneath Tyr's Temple, players can find two separate cipher chests in the left and right rooms containing the giant chains.
Unlocking the Mist Realm and Its Rewards
Once Atreus deciphers all four pieces, players can use the Realm Travel Table in Tyr's Temple to visit Niflheim. This foggy realm features Ivaldi's Workshop, a randomly generated maze filled with deadly mist and valuable resources like Mist Echoes. Collecting these items allows players to craft some of the most powerful armor sets available in the game.
